Yokoyama Woodwork, which was introduced by a friend in Kawagoe, is a company that mainly makes made-to-order furniture. Mr. Yokoyama has been enthusiastic about new manufacturing, has a large 5-axis CNC router, and has been talking about if he has a chance to use it. Yokoyama Woodworking does not have a lineup of original furniture, so we talked about trying to make original furniture using a CNC router, so we started to come up with ideas for furniture.
We thought it’s important to show expression of what 5-axis CNC router is able to do.
And, I proposed to make a chair carved out the motif of Naguri, which is a traditional curving technique in Japan.
MDF seems to be a suitable material that can be laminated to create a volume for carving. By sandwiching the color MDF (red) between the layers of the MDF, a pattern like contour lines appears on the surface.
