Station Square

2990m2

A proposal for the Nagoya Station West Gate Square will be open with opening of the maglev Shinkansen.
It required Nagoya-ness design and to clarify the flow of people to the city. It also required a consideration of the square to be removed in 3-5 years after opening.
Unlike the east exit, which has skyscrapers, the west exit of Nagoya Station retains the deep essence of Nagoya, which is lined with workers' hostels, Asian grocery stores, and anime shops. And I thought that the west exit needed a different Nagoya-ness, not the main icon of Nagoya like Nagoya Castle.
Therefore, we decided to create an arcade in front of the station, which is a symbol of Nagoya's public culture represented by Osu Shopping Street, to connect the station to the city. A simple iron frame that is easy to remove later is painted pink and drops monochromatic foreign objects into the town to express the temporaryness of the project, like the Christo & Jeanne Claude installation.
