FAMILY CLUB Taiwan Flagship Store — Interior Design Project
Located on Changan West Road in the heart of Taipei’s Zhongshan District, this compact ground-floor space faces a verdant, park-like pedestrian walkway. Outside, a newly designed landscape unified by organic forms of grey washed-plaster (exposed aggregate), standalone pavilions, and benches creates a striking contrast with the backdrop of the existing cityscape.
Reflecting the nature of the store—a hub showcasing Japanese entertainment—and inspired by the surrounding park environment, the goal was to move away from rigid, conventional retail fixtures. Instead, the design weaves elements of the park indoors to cultivate a vibrant, engaging destination.
Weaving the scenery beyond the window directly into the interior.
The design transposes three distinct elements of the external environment—the continuous landscape of grey exposed aggregate, the cluster of existing buildings standing across the street, and the endlessly unfolding sky—into the interior’s 'floor, walls, and ceiling'. This creates a space where the interior and exterior flow together in a comfortable, seamless continuity.
The ceiling features a deep coffered grid assembled from plaster-textured panels, while the floor is treated with a soft-textured plaster finish. By extending this floor finish continuously up the walls and fixtures to a height of 850 mm, the space is beautifully divided into three horizontal bands. This structural composition guides the eye naturally and horizontally towards the outside, creating a sense of serene calm.
The fixtures adopt a playful, engaging design: wall shelves with a gadget-like, lightning-bolt cross-section; modular nest-of-boxes shelving that can be rearranged for different configurations; and cork furniture utilizing Dudeney's triangle, which can transform from a square into an equilateral triangle. This approach achieves a dynamically changing interior reminiscent of a 'PLAYGROUND'.
